Making Family Memories

Memphis, TN – London – Washington DC – Monterey, CA

… what do these places have in common?

Give up?  They are on a recommended list for multi-generational family vacations.

It’s that time of year when families are planning for either spring break or summer vacays and what would be better than a trip to make memories with the whole family – from grandpa to grandchildren!   Nothing or EVERYTHING if you don’t remember a few important items when planning your trip…

First of all, involve everyone in the planning.  It is so important that the grandchildren feel included and have input on what sounds interesting to them. It is just as important or maybe more so that the teens are “invested” in the trip to make sure it’s a pleasant experience for all.  And communicate, communicate, communicate!   Share all details with everyone, make sure everyone is on the same page, and expectations are clear.

Second, do NOT overbook the activities.  It is a great idea to plan tours as a group and activities that you wouldn’t be able to do around home – but all in moderation.   Maybe have group event days, when everyone joins in, and optional activity days, when smaller groups experience different activities together or just chill.  It will also be essential to have downtime by the pool, inside, or in the shade to rest and relax.  Intentionally scheduling time as a group to check in periodically about how things are going – what’s working – what’s not quite right or ideal – so issues can be addressed right away and you can keep doing what’s working.  During that time encourage everyone to share what he/she has enjoyed about the trip or what they will talk about when they get back to school.  This will allow for great discussions and help to keep everyone in a positive and good frame of mind.

Third, pair up “activity buddies” for each group event.  This allows each family member to have a buddy to experience the adventures with.  It also provides opportunities to connect generations and share different perspectives across generations.  For example, partnering up the teen and grandpa to experience the museum…can you imagine the conversation!?!?!

Don’t forget to take lots of pictures – make sure the photographer isn’t always left out of the pictures, take turns writing a blog or in a journal each day, and have LOTS OF LAUGHS!!!

Making memories, making memories

Taking pictures is making memories

Catching little pieces of times

Making them yours, making them mine.

Great vacations and celebrations

Can fade away in a year.

But when we're making memories,

Happy days are always here.

It’s all about making memories!!
